It occurred to me on about Tuesday of this week, as Christmas stress began to creep in, that I was in the process of trying to deliver the exact same Christmas I delivered last year. This year in no way closely resembles last year. Like, remember school? Remember those delightful 30 hours a week we used to have without children in our homes? That Christmas gift we didn’t even know we were receiving? Santa sure-as-schmidt doesn’t have that on his sleigh for me this year.
It occurred to me on about Tuesday of this week, that I have to reevaluate my to-do lists. I simply cannot do what I did in 2019 in 2020 and remain merry and bright. Every year I try to think of my “One Less Wreath” tasks, but this year I have to think of it as six less wreaths or, how about no wreaths at all?
This is not me being a Scrooge McDuck here TeamC, I got the flippin’ wreaths and I’ll put them up. But there are other things I just have to be willing to let go of. And letting go hurts, especially when it comes to traditions. But, I don’t want to trade-in my peace for projects. If I dig my heels in and try to do everything on that old list, the kids are going to be the ones who suffer. I want to teach them that when life hands you Christmas confusion, you meet it with adaptation, not tension.
It’s super easy to write all this, now let’s see if I can actually practice it.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars…
