Using Safe Words With Your Clothes On – The Healing Power of Humor and Boundaries

Listen to the podcast

For those of you who don’t know, the need for a “safe word” derives from intimate encounters. People choose a “safe word” so their boundaries can be clear and honored. Yeah, I know—I didn’t think I’d ever be talking about this in Confessions either, but stay with me here, Team.

While planning a family vacation during the pandemic this summer, it quickly became clear that everyone involved had varying levels of comfort around sharing lodging, space, and food. While trying to bring some lightness to the serious discussions, we suggested the use of “safe words” when we were together.

Having one word, the more ridiculous the better, is a silly (but highly effective) way to let people know when they’re approaching my discomfort zone.

While we don’t have our holiday plans ironed out yet, you can bet that when we do, it’s not just going to be “Merry Christmas!” singing from these pipes. My family best back-the-yuletide-up and give MamaDe augmentation of the celebration separation when they hear me belt out, “PINNACLE!”

Mark your calendars!!!

I would love for you to join me as I work to undo these old patterns and evolve to create a more serene and accepting existence. (And you should know that I still want to ear flick the little knuckleheads {this includes my husband} when they don’t rinse a dish before putting it in the dishwasher — always a work in progress.)
