Open – Looking at What’s Right Rather Than What’s Wrong

There’s a huge part of me that would love to be jumping back into the blog circuit in a blaze of glory, but I’m running out of steam, people. These twerps are sucking up all of my energy. I’ve taken to walking around the house, teeth clenched, talking to myself about how resentful I am at the little buggers for sitting on their cans while I get everything done. Oh yes, my friends, it is peak martyr season here in the DePetris home. That magic yellow bus got here just in the nick of time.
A friend shared with me something that I oh so needed to hear: Keep the focus on what’s working in your life. Because I like things tidy, I can use this time of year as an opportunity to get out my proverbial cleaning supplies and come up with all the ways I’m going to perfect this, and that, and you. But do I ever decide to just look at what’s working and keep my focus there? Nope.
As I mentioned in The Wind’s Work, I’m trying my best to put down the chisel this year. There’s no better way to do that than by looking at all areas of my life: self-care, marriage, family, work, home, etc., and put energy into what’s thriving and bringing me joy, rather than what’s not. My friend went on to share that when she did this, she not only had the most successful year of her career, she also found that the other “issues” just magically worked themselves out.

Now, I know my toilets aren’t going to clean themselves, but there are plenty of things I can choose to let go of that will likely turn out just fine in the end. Rather than looking at what’s not clean enough in my life, I’m going to attempt to keep my focus on the things that are sparkling already.

I would love for you to join me as I work to undo these old patterns and evolve to create a more serene and accepting existence. (And you should know that I still want to ear flick the little knuckleheads {this includes my husband} when they don’t rinse a dish before putting it in the dishwasher — always a work in progress.)
