When the children were little and my husband went on long business trips, we would go into what I deemed, “Survival Mode.” We’d lower those standards just about as low as they’d go. None of this balanced meal nonsense. None of this limited screen time B.S. And no. There’s not a flippin’ chance in God’s green garden that I’m reading more than one book to you before bedtime—just go to sleep!
TeamConfessions, spring is in swing, which means TeamDe is in hardcore Survival Mode. And everyone in the family knows exactly what to do—lower the crap out of your expectations of Mom and Dad.
Recently, a lot more responsibility got put onto our plates. That means, things also have to come off our plates. Cleaning up after kids feels like a perfect place to start. And if they don’t clean up after themselves, there’s a good chance we’re going to guilt them into doing it. Yeah, that’s right. I’m not proud of it, but another great thing about Survival Mode is that I don’t care what people think because I don’t have time to care what people think. And hey—if they had cleaned up after themselves in the first place, they wouldn’t be made to feel bad about it. That’s all I have to say about that.
I’m barely cooking, we’re eating off paper plates, we’re lowering every standard—truth be told, I love it. There was just this one time when our Survival Mode livin’ was a tad bit embarrassing. Friends were over and I was making popcorn. When the microwave dinged, my then 3 year old daughter announced, “DINNER’S READY!”
I just gotta take the good with the bad Team.
