Mirror Reflections – Beyond Physical Fitness Goals

Listen to the podcast

You guys know, I’m a big fan of my group fitness classes at the YMCA. But, in these group exercise rooms, there are lots of mirrors. While I know some people like to see their reflection when they exercise, I am not one of them. So in every class, I find that I position myself as far away from my reflection as possible.

When I shared this with my friend and Confessions super-photographer Kelly Tonks, she gently encouraged me not to limit my fitness journey to physical wellness alone. She suggested that I can work on strengthening my overall fitness by appreciating the reflection of my shape, my lines, and my smile.

Team, as much as I’d love to avoid this topic entirely, Kelly’s got a point. My self-acceptance fitness needs attention. And if the root of my recovery from micromanaging, perfectionism, and martyrdom is compassion, this seems like another great area of my life to be mindful of. I guess from listening to me, Kelly’s observed that my inner critic could use some cardio classes too.

The truth is, I don’t like looking in the mirror at the gym because I don’t think it actually reflects me. I have this moment of, Wait, is that what I really look like? But I think Kelly’s point is to stop asking that question because it puts the focus on the wrong thing. Instead, I can choose to see what’s actually happening in that mirror. Which is someone connecting with her community, laughing, lifting, stretching, dancing, and then showing up again tomorrow.

I guess it makes sense, though, right Team? If muscles don’t stay strong from staring at them, neither does self-compassion. Maybe both are built the same way: quietly, over time, one small rep after another.

How about you, TeamConfessioners? Could you use some strengthening in your self-acceptance fitness? I’d love to hear from you in the comment section below this post on my website.

Next week, we’ll be hearing the second part of my three part Confessions Conversation with Christine and Dave Patenaude where we talk about an abrupt job loss that changed things overnight for their family. The episode includes some life lessons you won’t want to miss. But, until then, have a lovely week, and thanks so much for listening!
